| Live 2 Dine
| The
posh interior bar counter greets us as we
enter, the Heritage restaurant immediately
shrouding us in its classy and elegant charm.
Have a sip of spicy Indian masala tea as
you tuck into the restaurant’s delicious
papadums. Partnered with three different
dips, savoury, spicy and sweet, the appetizer
truly prepped our taste buds for the plethora
of food ahead. Authentic north Indian cuisine
is the mainstay here and the restaurant
prides itself on “carrying Indian
tradition on a platter”. |

Wine & Dine
"Diners
can find lesser known gems in the extencive
menu featuring appetizers, tandoori dishes,
soups, biryani dishes, curries and special traditional
dishes. We were instantly won over by the lovely
soft texture and warm flavours of the bite-sized
papri chaat from the appetizer section, a canapé
like starter of potatoes, chick peason crispy
papri, topped with yoghurt and tamarind chutney.
On the other hand, the traditional vegetarian
dish of kathal ki subzi - jackfruit cooked in
Indian spices, surprised us with its succulent
meat-like texture and rich flavours.
Pleasant surprises can
be found even in familiar dishes - a sampling
of the kabab and vegetarian platters from tandoori
selection revealed spicy flavours that hit home.Little
wonder that tandoori food should be one of the
main attractions of the restaurant.
Yet it is not just their
signature tandoori dishes that exhibit such
delicate refinement. While Indian dishes are
usually perceived as heady and overwhelming
liberal usage of herbs and spices, the dishes
presented throughout the meal were just suitably
flavoursome yet very distinct in character."

Innovation marries tradition
at Heritage
I don't care if you're
the sort who never eats starters - you must
order the Corn Bhel ($7) appetiser. Corn, onions,
tamarind, coriander and crispy snack bits make
an addictive blend of spiciness, sweetness,
home-style texture and fine-dining flavour.
Flawless and irresistible.
Having tried goat mutton
before and found it stringy and pungent, I was
surprised by Heritage's Gosht Bhuna ($18). The
goat meat cooked with fresh spices and herbs
in a tomato-based sauce is unexpectedly tender
and mild.
Perhaps the most unusual
item I had was Kathal Ki Subzi ($12), a main
course - of jackfruit! The cooked fruit has
substantial texture, yet is fresh and not remotely
rubbery, unlike its raw state. It feels fibrous
under your cutlery, but is superbly tender in
the mouth.
The Kulfi Mango ($6) also
pleased me. It is certainly very sweet, as expected
of this ice-cream dessert, but not in as tooth-shatteringly
cloying a way as in some other restaurants.
If this has whetted your
appetite, September will be an especially good
time to visit as they'll have a "pay for
two, get one free" deal on their set meals.
Eat
"Besides common fare
like chicken malai kabab and paneer or cottage
cheese, the menu also includes popular street
food and home recipes from various states of
North India. One interesting dish is the Boti
Kabab. The smooth and creamy texture of the
goat-meat reminded us of foie gras. Imagine
our surprise when we realized that the kathal
ki subzi wasn't a meat dish, but jackfruit cooked
in Indian spices. Due to its texture, its also
known as 'Vegetarian's meat'.
'Worried about the spiciness
of the dish? Look for the number of chillies
printed next to the name on the menu.'
'We were initially cautious
when presented with the kulfi pistachio as our
past encounters with Indian Deserts have been
saccharine affairs. However the creamyfrozen
milk desert flavoured with pistachio and cardomoms
wasn't overly sweet, so it vanished from the
plate in an instant.'

"Heritage has a good
selection of tandoori items and biryanis and
curries such as the Heritage Special Hyderabadi
Kachhe Gosht Ki Biryani (choice cuts of baby
lamb cooked along with basmati rice in a special
vessel and served with burai raita). For those
on the run, there are vegetarian and non-vegetarian
thalis - various dishes with Indian bread and
a sweet."
Her World
"Dig into the streetside
snacks such as papri chaat (potatoes, chickpeas
and crispy crackers with tamarind chutney) and
kachori (a brittle spice filled puff), and traditional
tandoori chicken, gosht curry and fluffy, fragrant
biryanis. Try kathal ki subzi (Rakesh's Mum's
secret recipe of tender jackfruit cooked in
spices), mushroom bhaji (in a mild tomato and
chilli sauce) and hari makai ( a rich spinach
dish with corn and cream).
